Webby Wednesday: 23rd.com

Ever seen a picture of an outfit and had no idea where to buy it? I recently got an e-mail introducing me to 23rd, all you need to do is to drag an image of an outfit you like into the site's search bar, and voila! It will find you the most visually similar products, using unique visual intelligence technology. Welcome to the future of fashion!

Headquartered in LA, 23rd is the world's first visual fashion search engine. It is currently the only venture in the market which uses visual intelligence technology to analyse whole looks as submitted by users, and in turn find users the most visually similar products based on their preferred looks. I haven't tried it yet, but looking at the video clip it looks amazing! Find out more by clicking here.

Clutches with Character

Clutch bags with a character create a spectacular finishing touches to day or night outfits. I spotted this very retro sublime and slightly over-sized clutch at Dries Van Noten Boutique in Al Thurraya Complex in Salmiya. I love the color combination used on the exotic leather. But you if you're looking for more budget friendly version, check out the one below from Zara. Very impressive ha? I also found this clutch/makeup bag decorated with skulls and studs at Zara too. But wait... is that.. a missing skull on the far right corner of the clutch? I think it is! Oh well.. it looked nice at first. I hope who ever end up buying it won't be get charged full price!

Dear Confashion: Keswah's New A/W 2012 Collection

Keswah, the brainchild of three Emarati girls who have joined forces to create their own fashion label in contemporary caftans and whom I have previously featured here, have shared with me their new lookbook of Keswah's latest A/W 2012 collection.

What impressed me was the fact that they not only have managed to present a simple yet très chic collection and a beautifully designed lookbook, but also have taken matters under their hands, from setting the photoshoot, hair, and makeup, to styling and even video editing, which to me looked quite professional. Kudos to Keswah.

For more information, please send an email to info@keswah.com.

Dear Confashion: Ayten Jewelry

I guess jewelry is the flavor of the week! Ayten El Mofty, a new contemporary jewellery designer, has e-mailed me to introduce me to her brand entitled Ayten. As I skimmed through her lookbook, I was particularly drawn to her use of skulls with precious stones. Simple yet pretty necklaces and bracelets, perfect for your everyday use, or can make a beautiful birthday or a Christmas gift for your family and friends.

"All of my pieces are handcrafted using the highest caliber of workmanship and materials. All the pieces are either black onyx plated, gold plated or white gold plated. The materials used are silk strings, semiprecious stones, gold plated chains, and pearls.", expressed El Mofty.

Dazed and Confused

I know I posted about Black Pearl jewelry and accessories exhibition already here, but I just managed to view their photo gallery, and I wish I didn't! Everything looks so pretty! And I can't decide on which item to get! Great!

It's All in the Detail

For me, adding the right accessories can totally transform any look from boring to chic. But this season, dresses with interesting details are doing all the talking, leaving no space for piling on the accessories. And I'm not complaining! During a recent visit to Al Othman Boutique, my 1# shopping destination for formal evening wear, I've found several gorgeouuuusss formal dresses. But instead taking a full shot photo of the dress, I've decided to give you a teaser by showcasing the dress's best details. Starting with the first featured photo, who needs a collar necklace when you can get all this fabulous embellishment on your dress's neckline? Navy colored dress by Preen.

An Attempt to Get Out

I spotted this art piece on the entrance of Abdul Aziz Hussein Theater in Mishref, when I attended the Japanese Taiko Drum Concert, and thought sharing its beauty with my art-loving readers. This sculpture was created by Kuwaiti artist Sami Mohammed in 1978 and it's titled An Attempt to Get Out. I have previously featured his work here.  Such a masterpiece, evoking many strong emotions and questions.

The artist held an exhibition last month at Gallery Tilal , and you can find out more about the artist here.

Flavor of the Day: Nicholas Kirkwood Lace Heels

Nothing beats the feeling of finding statement fashion piece that I've luster after for so long, but was hesitant to buy,  slashed with a great discount! Spotted these blue leather lace-up stunners by Nicholas Kirkwood on Al Othman Outlet. They were priced at KD 359 and now they're on 50% discount and are priced at KD 179 only! It's a beautiful day indeed!

Team Kelly or Team Birkin?

I'd say team Kelly in all shapes and sizes and team Birkin only if it's a vintage 45cm+ in size or the super mini one as seen on the brand's S/S 11 runway show. But until the right time comes, I'll feast my eyes on  Moda Operandi's selection of Vintage Hermès.  The online trunk sale pioneer, is currently offering a big selection of vintage and timeless Hermès Kelly and Hermès Birkin bags as well as a few some classic clutches. The sale is only open to Moda Operandi members, so to become a member, simply please click here.

Lovely Lara

In the midst of the rapid growth of new and emerging fashion designers in our region, whether talented or talentless, it’s always a treat to find someone who can produce the same, if not better, quality and creativity of high-end designer brands. Allow me to introduce you to a new Beirut-based talent: Lara Khoury.

Lara Khoury, a 26 year old ESMOD graduate with a strong passion for designing couture-like pieces, has joined fashion designer Elie Saab in Beirut in September 2006 to learn more about this mesmerizing industry. Fast forward to 2009, Lara became one of the few designers chosen by renowned Labense fashion designer Rabih Kayrouz to be a part of Starch Boutique in Beirut, a laboratory of new ideas, and showroom for contemporary young Lebanese designers.

In 2010, Lara Khoury found the assurance to launch her first collection; and opened her own studio and workshop in the heart of Beirut. Her Spring 2011 collection was recently launched among friends and esteemed guests.

On May 2011, Lara Khoury was selected to represent Lebanon on the second generation of the Maison Méditerranéenne des Métiers de la Mode in Marseille (France). The program offers a platform for artistic and cultural cooperation between Euro-Mediterranean countries to unite, reveal and support young fashion designers based on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea.

Featured here are some of my favorite Lara Khoury designs from her recent and previous collections. I love how she mixes opulence with minimalism. There is always one interesting point of detail to focus on. Each item gives the illusion of constant movement flowing through fabrics. So pretty!

For more information, orders, or inquiries, please call (+961) 1 44 34 26. Lara Khoury headquarters is located at 406 Gouraud street, Gemayzeh, Beirut, Lebanon.

A Memorable Night... Thank You Japan

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Japanese Taiko Drum Concert hosted by the Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the National Council for Culture, Arts, and letters. The concert was part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Kuwaiti-Japanese diplomatic relations. It was held at Abdul Aziz Hussein theater in Mishref, and I just have to take this opportunity to express how much I loved it and how much I loved the courteous and warm welcome of the Japanese hosts.

The performance started with a small speech by Japan’s ambassador in Kuwait, which he did in Arabic and I was very impressed by that. The audience loved this gesture and gave him a strong applause.  And then the performance started (scroll down for a preview of the clip).

The band, which consisted of a Taiko drummer, a violinist, and a saxophonist, gave a stunning and a powerful performance mixing traditional Japanese drum ensembles with modern sounds. Their energy and passion was truly infectious. I especially loved the band’s exceptional drumming skills. It was like nothing I have ever seen before, truly a musical piece of art  The concert really got me thinking into choosing Japan as my next travel destination.

The only thing I was disappointed by was the fact that there was a weak audience turnout. It’s a shame! The event was announced in the newspapers and a couple of other blogs, plus admission is free, one would expect a stronger turnout. Anyways, there will be another performance by the band tonight at 7:30 PM. So how about you kick start the long weekend with some cultural dose?

At the entrance of the theater, there was a beautiful kimono on display. Check out how pretty and precise the embroidery is.

And here's a short clip which I took last night of the stunning performance by the TAIKO band . The video really does not do it justice.
