Pimp My Abaya

In an attempt to link fashion to the region's culture, Saks Fifth Avenue (Saudi branch) has hosted a fashion show of designer Abayas in Paris a few days ago at luxury hotel George V.

Designers who have joined the tricky exercise to glam up one of the world’s most traditional piece include: Christian Dior's John Galliano, Anne-Valerie Hash, Nina Ricci , Felipe Oliveira Baptista, Jean Claude Jitrois, Blumarine, Alberta Feretti, Martin Grant, and Caroline Herrera. The designer abayas are said to be worth $5,500-$11,150 and some abayas will be offered to Saks's VVIP Saudi clients in Riyadh and Jeddah. The rest will be sold in Saks branches in Saudi, Bahrain, and Dubai by September 2009. Read more about it here and here.

You know what's even more bazaar? Four days earlier, French president Nicolas Sarkozy offensively declared that full-body veils such as the burka are "not welcome" in France, saying they make women prisoners. Note to Sarkozy: Stick to politics dude and live and let live.

I'd like to see the entire collection in detail. It reminded me when Sheikh Majid asked designers to design Kaftans exclusively to Villa Moda.

Unique Uterqüe

I'm sure most of you fashionistas out there have heard of Uterqüe. But for those who haven't, it's a new store that recently opened at The Avenues next to Baroue. The store belongs to the Spanish group that owns Zara. It specializes in trendy accessories and leather goods. It also has a small selection of elegant and sophisticated clothes. The collection is designed with the idea of producing high quality clothes and accessories in very affordable prices. I found some nice pieces at amazing budget-friendly prices.

You can never have too many shoes! I was sooo tempted to buy all those 3 flats! Thank god my friend was with me to talk some sense into me. The black Swarovski crystals encrusted clutch shown below is priced at KD 106. Not bad at all!

The New Age Fairy

As you may have already noticed, discovering new talents from this part of the world has become my niche recently. So in this post, I'm thrilled to introduce to you Lebanese designer Karen Karam.

Let me give it to you plain and simple, Karen, the Central Saint Martins graduate, is the modern day fashion fairy who designs very wearable funky and girly organza/satin cocktail dresses with a mix of ethereal draping and uber accents.

If the words "Central Saint Martins" didn't shake you up or move a single stylish nerve then read more..

Karen Karam has interned with the biggest names in the fashion industry including Alexander McQueen, Chloe, and John Galliano. Also, Her accessories collection was sold at Collette, Paris's hottest and hippest shopping destination for limited and exclusive fashion and lifestyle merchandise. She has won the Mulberry Bag Award competition and she was also a finalist at Mango's young designers competition. Her clothes were already donned by Natalie Imbruglia and Lily Allen and are currently sold at Boutique one in Dubai and Cream boutique in Beirut.

Frugal Fendi Finds

Fendi boutique is having it's seasonal sale and even though I'm not a huge fan of Fendi's accessories, I actually found some interesting items there at great prices.

I wouldn't buy a Fendi Baguette now. I Already have 2 Baguettes which I purchased more than 8 or 9 years ago, but I do find them fun and interesting to look at and admire the artwork and creativity of most of them. I liked the one featured here. it's satinish, padded, and embroidered. Cute!

And I actually find Fendi's tan Peek-a-Boo bag, featured in the photo above, a very practical and chic addition to your wardrobe which can be worn for years to come.

If you're looking for heels with a punch of color then check out these bright blue, black, and beige strappy platform sandals with a patent leather heel that measures approximately 130mm high. The heels have a zip at back to fasten and are now on sale. Price after the 50% discount? Around KD 85.

I didn't like the evening clutches shown here, but they're on sale and I thought some of you might like them. I think they were less than KD 250.

More is More

More is more sometimes. And that applies to Louis Vuitton's accessories spring AND fall collection. I loved these gold hoop earrings with a mix of light wood and colored plastic shapes from the brand's S/S 2009 collection. It very well translated this season's a tribal-ethnic trend. Wear to up the ante on a plain ensemble.

LV's Spicy heels were on the boutique's window display and this version of the Spicy heels looked ugly!

I liked the strctured shoulders detail of this cobalt blue top on the manniquin. not sure of the price tag though.

Working From 9 To 5

Check out Marella's new season ad campaign which I have received by e-mail. The featured outfits are ideal for working women in the corporate world. Reminded me of Dolly Parton's song work in '9 to 5'.

There’s nothing that spices up a normal, boring evening dress quite like a pair of beautiful evening heels. And when I need a stunning pair of heels, I shop around at Giuseppe Zanotti, Louboutin, Sergio Rossi, and Jimmy Choo.

Jimmy Choo's summer collection has several classy evening heels which I chose to show here. They're so easy to gild your feet in, some styles might not be the most comfortable, but they sure are glamorous evening accessory for this season and beyond. Unfortunately, they're not on sale yet. I think they're sale will start mid July.

Sharing The Love

With all the competitive Ramadan Exhibitions going on lately, it's almost impossible to find a Kaftan (darra'a) that looks unique and not your typical mix'n'match kaftan or a patchwork creation with the worst stitching/finishing ever + ridiculously overpriced. So I was impressed to find this darra'a at I Love Souk. The bright pink colored darra'a had a print of a diamond and emerald necklace on it's neckline which immediately reminded me of Mary Katrantzou's gorgeous collection. Of course the darra'a does not even come close to the beauty of Katrantzou's. But it was a refreshing change from what we usually see. I just wish the darra'a had more volume of fullness to it. And for those who like to go all matchy-matchy. The darra'a comes with a matching clutch as shown in the below photo.

I Love Souk's other new arrivals include these uber-chic vintage sunglasses, some were encrusted with colored Swarovski crystals.

There were also few pieces left of Delfina Delettrez Jewelry collection up for sale. I wish I could buy her entire collection!

Stack up your arm with these gold bracelets when wearing your Ramadan kaftan. Whether you decide to slip into one bracelet or go for the stacked look, make sure your arms are tanned for that lazy summer glow.

Funky feathered and colored clutches look too winter-ish for ths summer, but you can invest in one for the next season. I liked the ones shown in the above photo more than the ones shown below. Oh! And the clutch comes with a matching hair band. Not my thing...

Now here's something you wouldn't find anywhere else! T-shirts with vintage-y arabic motifs. The one shown here in the middle, has an image of a book cover from an old arabic book series which I used to read and collect! Brought back good memories.

This season I have a major weakness towards any exotic leather. I liked these Zara snake skin salmon pink sandals. Don't expect great quality though.

I'm not crazy about this Marc Jacobs shoulder shoulder chain bag, but it was nice to look at for a minute or two (max!) plus the purple leather tassels look cute. The bag is currently available at Marc Jacobs boutique at Al Thurraya Complex

Karen Millen had a nice pair of jeweled thong sandals which look very glam to wear for lounging at a pool party or to add some zest to your vacation look

Stella McCartney's black mesh basket open toe sandals with gathered elastic sling back, which are the season's most coveted pair of shoes and sold out almost everywhere, are available at the brand's boutique at Al Thurraya Complex AND they're on sale. I was surprised to find them very appealing to wear when I tried them on (and on the comfy side!). I think they're easy to pair with almost any outfit.

Middle East’s Best Kept Fashion Secret

When I was a little girl, I used to collect stickers (who didn’t!). My collection was impressive because I used to buy my stickers from Munich and Zurich and they were of the most unique types: scratch-and-smell stickers, velvety stickers, strawberry shortcake stickers…etc. Which were very hard to find in Kuwait if not non-existent. And what was even more annoying is the fact that I used to show off my precious collection to my cousins and friends at school. And when asked from where I got them, my memory magically and selectively chose not to mention the source.

That’s exactly how I felt when I first saw the gorgeous designs of Saudi designer Mohammad Ashi’s Fall/winter 2009 collection. I wanted to keep it all to myself. I wanted to purchase every piece I saw on the runway and hide it in my closet. But because his work is sooo amazing, it’s only fair to give such talent and creativity the publicity it deserves.

Mohammad Ashi has recently presented his first women’s prêt-a-porter fashion show for Fall/winter 2009 in Beirut. The collection is inspired by the gloomy and romantic image of blind young boy whose inability to see the world around him, only enhances his ability to feel its powerful forces, the fable of both a simple child's innocence and a complex look at faith and humanity. In an imaginary garden in black and white, full of followers and colors all too unfamiliar to the mind of a blind youth. All of these overwhelming images are translated into the Ashi collection, attempting to bring all of these unprecedented images to life through the use of luxurious and modern fabrics.

Mohammad Ashi attended a French design school and obtained his bachelor’s degree in three years. He then teamed up with Elie Saab to present an haute couture and ready to wear spring/summer 2006 collection. This was followed by working on autumn/winter 2006-07 collection as an assistant designer of accessories, including bags and shoes.

Khaki.. Khaki Cool

GAP's newest collaboration with CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominees Alexander Wang and Vena Cava is now on display at GAP's store at The Avenues Phase 1. The classic GAP khaki looks have been revamped with strong urban chic qualities. The collection was mediocre except for 2 items which I really liked: The Alexander Wang shrunken motorcycle jacket (shown below) and Vena Cava's African inspired shift dress (also shown below), which I snapped immediately off the rack because it was the LAST PIECE! How come this was not announced in the local media?! I found out about it by coincidence.

Pin Up Bag

I was surprised to see the Marc Jacobs Pre-Fall 2009 bags Collection already in store and on display in Kuwait THAT early! The new Marc Jacobs Fall bags feature a rather unique adornment: a large safety Pin (or two) and some come with a lovely green stone.

The Safety Pin themed bags come in 3 different styles: The Stam bag, an adorable mini clutch (below), and a gooooorgeous shoulder bag (shown above, my fave and it's around KD 400). The bag's leather is very smooth in texture and has black contrasting trim.

I want to see surprises like these at all of my favorite stores in Kuwait. Please don't keep us waiting until August or September!

Oh La La-nvin

I personally love Spring/Summer collections more than Fall. Not only because in this region we tend to wear our summer clothes 10 months a tear but also, the summer season brings out the best in bold colors. And this season, Lanvin excelled in the color department with his beautifully designed cocktail dresses. His accessories? TO DIE FOR! My absolute favorites? This tempting textured and colored croc shoulder bag with gold chain straps which can also turn into a clutch. Price tag? around KD 750. I'm not sure why its not on sale even though the same bag was 40% off in NYC!

And I luved this coral-ish vibrant necklace which also comes with matching earrings. The boutique also had few pieces from Lanvin's collaborated collection with Acne Jeans. But don't expect cheap prices for the diffusion line, the price are almost comparable with Lanvin's ready-to-wear pieces. upside? The clothes are on sale (not the accessories).

And I liked this "I want Lanvin not flowers" t-shirt. Well said Elbaz .. well said..

Killing Me Softly

Why, Oh Why! Why can't Mr. Pierre Hardy create the ugliest shoes on earth and spare me the agony of lusting over his pieces of art? Why can't I stretch my feet a size or two when the only pair of shoes I really want is sold out in my size everywhere (drama, I know!)! If it wasn't for an annoying something called "common sense", I could have easily spent my entire monthly savings on not one, nor two, but 4 pairs of Pierre heaven. heart heart!

ExperimentOne Sneak Preview

On popular demand, I'm posting photos of ExperimentOne bags which were sent to me by one of the creative masterminds of this well manufactured project. My favorite is the hobo leather bag featured here in the first photo. Can be carried as a shoulder bag using the chain strap or it can be carried inside your arm using the solid strap.

ExperimentOne is the brainchild of three bright Kuwait architects who decided to start a line of female handbags as a first experiment for them in the pursue of challenging and re-evaluating their design process. Three bright Kuwait architects decided to start a line of female handbags as a first experiment for them in the pursue of challenging and re-evaluating their design process. They preferred to call it an experiment for their consideration of the process of making the bag and evaluating its scale, proportion and materiality. Below are some sketches of their work.

The campaign, shot by Mario Testino, breaks in key online and print publications worldwide in August.

Star Status

I have recently received an e-mail introducing me to a London-based brand of amazing clutches called Vaza by the creative master behind them. I have checked out some of his creations and so far I'm loving what I'm seeing (my fave is the one featured here). The tones and different textures of Vaza clutches conjure up a dreamy journey that makes them undeniably special.

Vaza’s clutch bags are being spotted on red carpets and in fashion magazines around the world such as British Vogue. Fashion guru Patricia Field, best known as the 5th character in Sex And The City, carried a Vaza clutch to collect her Oscar for The Devil Wears Prada, while actress and style icon Tilda Swinton was spotted with one at Bafta ceremony in London.

Vaza studied at Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London. After graduating, he worked for Lanvin, Louis Féraud in Paris and Anna Molinari in Milan.

Jessica Alba's obsession with Gerard Darel didn't stop at the fringed flats, her outfit shown in the first photo and her Python bag in the 2nd photo are also by Gerard Darel. I'm in love with her purple pants with bow detail, but I wouldn't pair it with a boring plain white shirt. A colored top would have been more fun, or maybe a tux jacket, or oversized cardigan... the choices can be endless. And she needs to do something with the hair do!

Co-owner of Créme Boutique in Bahrain Rawan Al Mannai has just jump started her career in fashion. Her line Créme Couture by Rawan Al Mannai has recently been debuted at Bahrain Fashion Week and received great reviews. Rawan graduated from VCU with a major in Fashion Design and Merchandising.

Créme Couture managed to take our breathe away. It felt like Rawan designed this collection with a character in mind: a girl with a penchant for soft colors and feminine accents. Her figure-flattering creations focused on overblown evening gowns cut from luscious silks and fine tulle details. The collection also included a selection of fun day wear of summery jumpsuits and charming dresses.

It is very heart-warming, inspiring, and thrilling to see such creative talents from Bahrain and this region. I loved the collection and I hope to see more in the near future.

Smelly Andy

I was this close to buy this Andy Warhol perfume bottle by Bond 9 from Sephora the other day because of it's.. erm.. bottle design. I know! I'm even embarrassed to say it! But now it's all out in the open.. So there! The problem is, the perfume kind of stinky. But it was nice to look at the footwear illustrations.

Burberry to show during London Fashion Week‏

Burberry will be closing London Fashion Week on Tuesday 22 September 2009, moving its Spring Summer 2010 Burberry Prorsum womenswear show from Milan. The catwalk show celebrates the 25th anniversaries of both London Fashion Week and the British Fashion Council.

Burberry will also be hosting an event to mark the occasion on the evening of the show at its new recently opened Global Headquarters at Horseferry House, in Westminster.

The new 160,000 square foot Global Headquarters at Horseferry House, designed by Burberry Creative Director Christopher Bailey, feature cutting edge showrooms, design studios, offices and an in-house photo studio.

All Four One & One Four All

4 boutique is one of those places where I can easily go overboard without the slightest shopping guilt. The boutique was packed with very avant-garde pieces. Their accessories section had me hooked, especially when I saw Tom Binns's necklaces right there in front of me. "Tom Binns in Kuwait!!!" My favorite pieces were the "rock chic meets Jackie-O" safety pin and pearl necklace and the yellow neon bib necklace (around KD 500). The boutique also had a nice selection of Charlotte Olympia heels.

I was also very impressed to find out that they sell Zaha Hadid's tables as shown in the below two pictures. There was also the Club Chair from Lee Broom's Rough Diamond collection which was exhibited during the 2008 London Design Festival (last photo).

4 boutique is truly a hidden little gem in a very low-key location. A must-go place for every fashionista (guys too!) looking for unique and quirky cool items for her/his wardrobe or if you're looking for house accessories and furniture to revamp your home.
